I try to check weekly to add those folks who want to "see inside" but don't always make it. If you want to be added, and I don't get around to it fast enough, please leave a message here.. it will come in my email inbox.

I really hate that I have been forced to take this action due to meatspace ill behavior.. but that is life these days I suppose!

Some of the entries can be seen because of a snafu in LJ that changed the privacy settings in this journal, and I have not gone back to change them to friends only. Most are friends only.

I added this journal to my friend's list. I am an apartment dweller, so I must live vicariously through other gardeners. ;)

Here's another request to be added (as, I gather, is needed in case I feel a Need to comment on something you post). I seem to have stumbled upon your site in some mysterious round-about LJ way -- two or three steps of checking out friends of friends -- so perhaps some introduction is called-for.

I'm Don Fitch, a retired Cranky Old Geezer (although, actually, 80 isn't really _old_, you know), formerly Propagator/Nurseryman at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, living in an untamed Jungle of a tiny suburban lot in Covina, CA., (but with a Community Gardens plot worthy of a professional cake-decorator -- or it will be once the last vestiges of nut-grass are eradicated) and always interested in the experiences of other gardeners.

I'm especially delighted to find someone else who likes Ipheion. Mine -- especially those in containers, which tend to be a bit ahead of those in the ground -- are starting to look a bit tatty now, but they're still a pleasant reminder of the meadow-grass flowers in the Unicorn Garden tapestry. [I note that I've had a few problems with them disappearing if they're in rich soil &/or get much water during their dormant period, and if they aren't planted quite deeply they tend to devolve into tiny little bulblets (which is okay because most of these grow, though they don't produce such large flowers). Mine came, about a decade ago, from three different sources, all labeled "Wisley Blue", but I suspect this selection has tended to revert to the species pale, almost-white, color (although soil & location seem to have some effect on this). Yours, from the photo, seem to be a bit more blue than most of mine. ]

Welcome Don, and you are correct.. 80 is indeed not old! Interesting timing. I have just been out taking pictures of the "fuzzy spring back yard" before I mow it down.. because I LOVE the meadow look!

My mother "had" (held stewardship over is more accurate) a 200 year old Victorian "complex" in southern Alabama for a period of 15 years. They slowly restored the old girl to period inside and out, and fixed her leaks, and reverted her updating.. etc. The houses were located on approximately 2 acres that included a pecan orchard... again, with 200 year old trees. The trees were of six different varieties, and only produced nuts every other year, but they tasted so different from modern pecans to almost be different kind of nut. Everything about that place was old old old. That is where my Ipheion is from, and it is indeed bluer than anything modern I have seen, to include Wisley Blue. I have toyed with adding to it for years, by purchasing new varieties.. but I don't really want to do that because of the tendency to whiten and I don't know if that is a modern tendency or not.

I do have great success with them at the base of a sweetgum tree that sucks all nutrients away, so I concur with the "don't feed the babies too much" theory. *grin*

I had the same devolve into bulblets happen with two others in my landscape, the tuberose and gladiolas. I have planted both in various spots over the years, and since I have a tendency to "overplant" bulb areas... so there is always something going on, I periodically see a slender single leaf poking out.. and know that SOMEDAY those little baby bulblets will grow big enough to bloom. That is the hope anyway!

Welcome aboard Don!

I shall endeavor not to prove an axe murder. I got out of the habit of posting to my own journal years ago -- long story -- and now have the same out-of-practice timidity about it I get when I haven't driven on the freeway for a while. So while I'm mostly a lurker, I'm a benign one -- promise!

But buying my first house last summer has inspired a great hunger for gardening forums. Your comments are always full of good information and delightful demeanor. So I come seeking to learn more. Thanks for adding me.

I'd like to read your garden journal--I'm in Columbia, SC, and coming back to gardening after a few years, so looking for people nearby. I know you're a good bit warmer, but still, what we both deal with is the heat and humidity and warm nights!

And in my case, droughts...

Be warned .. my journal can be a bit hard to take sometimes, but welcome aboard!

A rowdy garden journal! I'll welcome it.

And take heart--the radar shows a lot of orange and red stuff headed your way (and a little bit for me, just maybe).
